Scope and Purpose

I have begun writing the Japanese edition of “100 Stories of Karate.”
Many Japanese karate instructors do not know the true origins of karate, and quite a few are unsure of what karate really is. For this reason, I have decided to write about the karate that I know.

Here, the term “karate” refers to two streams: the form of Western-style school gymnastics organized by Itosu Ankō, and the Te of Matsumura Sōkon—later known as Shuri-te—which was further studied and refined by Itosu’s disciples after karate was established. Styles such as Gōjū-ryū, Uechi-ryū, and other schools are not included here, as I do not possess sufficient knowledge of them.
